Response paper - Essay Example Apart from certain borrowing between some of them, like Judaism, Christianity and Islam on the one hand, and Hinduism and Buddhism on the other, these religious cults have developed a sophisticated vision of the creation, which definitely and firmly departs from the realm of mythology and appertain to the realms of divine and/or philosophy. Given the major differences, in terms of monotheism and polytheism, between those religions, as well as the fact that all of them claim ââ¬â quite understandably indeed ââ¬â the divine high ground, it does rather beg the question of how one can discern their true value. Their concepts of the creation could present us with all-important clues in regard to this question. Due to the borrowings between some of those religious cults, as stated earlier, and for the sake of brevity, the following sections discuss only two of them, which are considered prototypes ââ¬â Judaism and Hinduism. With its stunning array of traditions, which are not embraced by a single holy book or subjugated to a universal dogma, Hinduism hardly resembles an orderly religious cult, but rather a miscellany of things that Hindus consider essential to practice their religion ââ¬â from astronomy to music and dance1. The four Vedic collections ââ¬â Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharva ââ¬â which are believed to have been composed between 1750 BCE and 1500 BCE as a revealed scripture, consist of four sections each, namely hymns (Samhitas), directions for the performance of the sacred rituals (Brahmanas), the so-called ââ¬Ëcompositions for the forestââ¬â¢ (Aranyakas), and the Upanishads2. The latter are believed to have been composed around 600 BCE and are considered philosophical works which contain truths about the universe and the place of humanity in it3. The beginning of the world, according to Rig-Veda and Atharva-Veda, is seen as follows: ââ¬Å"In the

Bioswale final deliverable Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Bioswale final deliverable - Essay Example This issue combined with the excessive rain washes contaminants from cars that drive through these areas polluting the water that remains stuck for long periods of time in these ditches.Onesolution for this problem is the construction of a Bioswale as seen in Figure 1, which is designed to remove silt and pollution from surface and runoff water by acting as a natural bio-filter. The construction of a Bioswale would also help prevent mosquito nesting and would reduce the types of fumigation toxics which are sprayed in these areas to keep the mosquito population down. We will work closely with our community partner, ERAUFacility Management, in the designing and implementation of the Bioswale. Stormwater, parking lot, rooftop and residential water runoff can cause significant pollution in various cities and residential areas. Undeveloped areas provide a means of controlling surface runoff, but when rain falls on developed areas, infiltration and absorption of water is diminished. In most developed urban areas, the stormwater carries a lot of trash, heavy metals, bacteria and other pollutants generated in urban centers, hence degrading the quality of water in the receiving water bodies. Harmel et al 8 (715) ââ¬Å"Water is drained through the collection systems that convey the surface run off to water bodies like the rivers and lakesâ⬠. Additionally, high flows are dangerous to buildings, animals, and human beings. It can cause erosion and floods that damage properties, infrastructure, and habitats. Green infrastructure such as bioswales, permeable pavements, it has been emphasized in Booth et al 3(p 315), that planter boxes and rain gardens can be used to manage storm water and create healthier environments in urban centersâ⬠Booth et al 3 (315). ââ¬Å"Bioswales are vegetated, mulched linear ditches designed to control stormwater through infiltration, conveyance, and filtrationâ⬠(Jurries 8). They are intended to enhance the function of conveying systems by

Toussaint LVourture Essay Example for Free
Toussaint LVourture Essay In 1861, Wendell Phillips delivered a speech about the great accomplishments of the most powerful leader in Haiti; Toussaint-Louverture. The speech was written around the time when African Americans did not have the right to serve in the military. In his speech, Wendell Phillips praises Toussaint Louverture for creating equal rights when it comes to serving in the military. Wendell Phillips uses magnificent examples and metaphors to inform us about Toussaint-Louvertureââ¬â¢s great accomplishments; which are creating equal rights for everybody who wants to join the military. Phillipsââ¬â¢s purpose is to show people that they can accomplish their goals, if they are willing to fight for them. Toussaint-Louverture reached his goal of allowing African Americans to serve in the military by fighting against many armies and showing them that it doesnââ¬â¢t matter what race a person is. One of the examples Phillips uses is ââ¬Å"Men who despised him as a negro and a slave, and hated him because he had beaten them in many a battle.â⬠It shows that the Britons, Frenchmen, and Spaniards think that Toussaint-Louverture is of little value because of the fact that he is a slave and an African American, but they also fear him because they know what he is capable of. Hoehlein2 The example demonstrates that it doesnââ¬â¢t matter what race someone is and that every person should have the right to live their dream; and if it is a personââ¬â¢s dream to serve in the military, he should be allowed to fulfill it. The metaphor ââ¬Å"We measure genius by quality, not by quantityâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ that Wendell Phillips uses in his speech shows that Toussaint-Louverture has the ability to win the battles against those armies because he has the courage to fight for the rights of his people and he has his heart set on creating equal rights for everybody; and not because he has an army of thousands of men. Quality is far more important than quantity and African Americans should have the right to serve in the military if it is their dream to do so. Toussaint-Louverture proved that he was willing to fight for his dream of creating equal rights for everybody. When Wendell Phillips says ââ¬Å"Then, dipping her pen in the sunlight, will write in the clear blue, [â⬠¦] Toussaint-Louverture.â⬠it demonstrates how greatly appreciated and respected Toussaint-Louverture was. He was considered the most powerful leader in Haiti back then because he fought for equal rights and he accomplished his goal. African Americans are now allowed to serve in the military because Toussaint-Louverture made it possible for them to do so.

Life is Calling: How Far Will You Go? :: Peace Core Essays
Life is Calling: How Far Will You Go? There are many organizations today that help great causes and one in particular that I find most imperative. The Peace Core is an organization whose foundation is set on volunteers who dedicate two years or more to a cause they find worthy of their time and energy. The amount of aid and support the Peace Core has given to numerous other countries is overwhelming. The number of countries served and how many people have benefited are just a couple of the notable statistics the Peace Core has achieved. Besides these statistics the Peace Core has something else to offer, inspiration. The Peace Core inspires. Helping others, taking a risk, going somewhere new, experiencing something hands-on are characteristics of the Peace Core that are never left unsaid. Unlike other organizations where money is donated and occasional fundraisers are held, the Peace Core offers a personal experience. The stories and memories will never be lost or forgotten like twenty dollars easily can, wh en it is handed over without distinction to some other organization. There are three websites that portray the values and influential qualities of the Peace Core and I encourage people to explore them here and discover the goals and characteristics of the Peace Core that humanize our lives. In 1961 John F. Kennedy challenged the students of the University of Michigan to live and work in a foreign developing country to help bring peace and education. The challenge that Kennedy proposed, inspired the organization known as the Peace Core to develop. The Peace Core was officially established on the first of March in 1961. Today, the Peace Core has gone global and is recognized for its accomplishments in AIDS/HIV education, technological and business development, and restoring the environment. The principle of the Peace Core is to bring world peace and friendship between countries. The Peace Core is solely made up of volunteers to further display that the Peace Core is not money oriented but goal oriented focusing on bringing education and happiness to people and countries that need it. The Peace Core is such a huge organization and is the subject of countless websites.

Adolescent Depression and Suicide Early Detection and...
Adolescent Depression and Suicide: Early Detection and Treatment the Key Only in the past two decades has depression in adolescents been taken seriously. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. Therefore it comes to no surprise to discover that adolescent depression is strongly linked to teen suicide. Adolescent suicide is now responsible for more deaths in youths aged 15 to 19 than cardiovascular disease or cancer (Blackman, 1995). Despite this alarming increased suicide rate, depression in this age group is greatly under diagnosed and can lead to serious difficulties in school, work, andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Those pressured to excel maybe come overwhelmed by what is expected of them and can fall into using drugs and alcohol as a form of escape and may feel the only way out is that of suicide. On the other hand those teens without direction and lack of interest on the part of their parent s, may also turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of escape. They may contemplate and even attempt suicide as a way of either drawing attention to themselves or to just end their lives because no cares about them anyway. Dr. William Beardslee of Boston, working with children and teens exhibiting depression and suicidal tendencies feels these disorders are likely based on a complex interplay of biological/genetic forces and developmental transactions between teens, family members and the outside world. Some teens manage to survive and even flourish under the most difficult circumstances, while others flounder under the same conditions. Beardslee s research led him to several core factors in how well a teen or child will do in overcoming ongoing adversity. Primary among them were the ability to form strong relationships, an action-oriented outlook and a keen and cohesive sense of identity. An estimated 2,000 teenagers per year commit suicide in the United States, making it the leading cause of death after accidents and homicide.
